Some cases of lameness are caused by the development of bacteria, such as treponemes, in lesions on the foot caused by the floors or injuries.
They are responsible for digital dermatitis which can quickly contaminate an entire herd once the germs have entered the farm.

Advanced lesions require veterinary treatment and
assistance from a hoof trimmer.
However, when lesions are minimal or absent, other solutions, such as biocontrol, can be used to prevent development of the disease.
